Un projet dingue - A crazy project
Parfois, on tombe sur un projet dingue. Il y a des projets dingues, qui s'affichent tels quels, et je dois avouer qu'ils m'attirent pas mal. (Je n'ai d'ailleurs pas abandonné mon rêve de tricoter Intoxicating un jour).
Sometimes, you come upon a crazy project. There are crazy projects which are easily identified as such, and I must admit that they often attract me a lot. (I have not forgotten my dream to knit Intoxicating some day).
Puis il y a les projets dingues qu'on n'identifie pas tout de suite. Comme celui-ci, les Twisted Tulip Socks d'Interweave Knits, numéro printemps 2008. Franchement, une paire de chaussettes, qu'est-ce qu'il peut y avoir de compliqué?
And then, there are the crazy projects which sneak up on you. Like this one, the Twisted Tulips Socks from Interweave Knits, Spring '08. Honestly, what could be such a big deal about a pair of socks?
J'ai vu le modèle, j'avais un fil à chaussettes que je voulais tester (Regia Cotton), et j'ai démarré un soir de mars, en pensant que cela pouvait être un bon projet à prendre avec moi pour ma petite escapade alsacienne semestrielle.
I saw the pattern, I had this sock yarn I wanted to try out (Regia Cotton), and I cast on an evening in march, thinking that this could be a good take-a-long project for my twice-a-year solo trip to Alsace.
Après 4 rangs, j'ai réalisé que ceci n'était pas un modèle à tricoter en papotant avec les copines. Il y a des mini-torsades, il y a des trous-trous, il y a une façon bien spécifique de lire le diagramme, qui demande pas mal d'attention - et surtout, il n'y a pas un rang qui ressemble à un autre. Un projet totalement dingue.
After 4 rounds, I realized that this was not at all a project for mindless knitting while chatting with friends. There are mini-cables, there is some lace, there is a specific way to read the chart, which requires attention - and most of all, there is not one single round like another. A crazy project.
J'ai pris du crochet pour mon voyage en Alsace, et j'ai oublié ces chaussettes dans un coin pendant des semaines. Toutefois, récemment, je me suis dit que, si cela est un projet dingue, et bien, je suis peut-être dingue moi aussi. Car ce que vous voyez dans la photo est en fait la deuxième chaussette.
I brought some crochet to Alsace, and forgot about the socks for some weeks. However, quite recently, I realized that if this is a crazy project, well, I might just be a crazy person. Because this is actually the second sock.

Oh, Nancy!
Ce weekend, une vingtaine de tricoteuses heureuses se sont réunies à Marseille pour suivre des ateliers tricot animés par la créatrice américaine Nancy Bush.
This past weekend, around twenty happy knitters met up in Marseille in the south of France to follow workshops with the american designer Nancy Bush.
Je n'ai participé qu'à l'atélier de samedi, mais quel bonheur! Nancy nous a enseigné quelques techniques de dentelle estonienne (l'échantillon sur la photo est le résultat final de mes efforts de comprendre et apprendre). Très, très intéressant - il y a plusieurs idées qui percolent dans ma tête. Nous avons regardé des châles finis et des photos d'Estonie.
I only participated in the Saturday workshop, but it was wonderful! Nancy taught us some Estonian lace techniques (the swatch pictured is the final result of my efforts to understand and learn). It was very, very interesting, and several ideas started to brew in my head. We also looked at stunning finished shawls and photos from Estonia.
Tout cela était génial, mais pour moi, le plus grand bonheur était de me retrouver dans une pièce remplie de personnes aussi dingues (de fils) que moi. Beaucoup d'entre elles (on n'était que des femmes) portait quelque chose fait maison, les sacs étaient remplis d'objets finis et d'encours. L'ambiance était joyeuse et amicale, et pendant que nous attendions Nancy (qui avait quelque difficultés de se frayer une chemin dans Marseille) les aiguilles cliquaient et le tripotage des projets des autres allait bon train.
All this was great, but what made me the most happy was to find myself in a room filled with people just as (fiber) crazy as myself. Many of them wore something they had made themselves, and their bags were filled with FOs and WIPs. The atmosphere was happy and friendly, and while we were waiting for Nancy (who had some difficulties to find her way through Marseille), the needles flew and a lot of fondling of other people's projects took place.
Mille mercis à Fannie, l'organisatrice du weekend! Cela fait très envie de recommencer. Et peut-être cela se fera, l'année prochaine, sous une autre forme... Je vous tiendrai au courant!
Many, many thanks to Fannie, who organized this weekend by her own initiative! I would really love to do it again. And perhaps we will, next year, in a different way... I'll let you know!

Il m'a fallu quelque temps pour la finir. Le plus long était la fermeture éclair. Non pas qu'elle était difficile à coudre (c'est à peu près mille fois plus facile de coudre une fermeture éclair dans un vêtement crocheté que dans un vêtement tricoté), mais je l'avais commandé dans ma mercerie locale, et le fabricant/grossiste a mis une éternité pour la livrer.
It took me some time to finish this design. The most time-consuming part was the zipper. No, it wasn't difficult to sew in (it's about a million times easier to sew in a zipper in a crocheted garment than in a knitted one), but I had ordered it in my local haberdashery, and it took the manufacturer/wholesaler an eternity to finally deliver it.
Le dos et les devants ont été réalisés par Christine Laurès - un travail absolument impeccable, merci beaucoup Christine! En fait, je pense que Christine a été plus rapide pour faire le plus gros de la pièce que moi pour faire la capuche...
The back and fronts were crocheted by Christine Laurès, who did a wonderfully precise job. Thanks a lot Christine! I actually think that Christine was quicker to work up the major part of the garment than I was to decide on the final shape of the hood...

La suite de mon échantillon - The rest of the swatch
Les mailles allongées, c'est bien, mais comment les comparer aux autres? J'ai continué mon échantillon avec d'abord des demi-brides, et ensuite des mailles serrées "classiques". Dans chaque type de maille, j'ai d'abord fait 4 rangs en marron, 2 rangs en beige, 2 rangs en marron et 2 rangs en beige. Toutes les mailles ont été travaillées dans le brin avant de la maille du rang précédent. Le nombre de mailles ne change pas (10).
Extended stitches are interesting, but I found it still more interesting to compare them to others. That's why I continued my swatch, working first half double crochets and then "ordinary "single crochet. For each different stitch I worked 4 rows of brown, 2 rows of beige, 2 rows of brown and 2 rows of beige. All stitches were worked in the front loop only, and there are 10 stitches per row throughout the swatch.
Voyons voir... Ce qui me semble le plus frappant est le fait que les mailles serrés allongées s'étalent nettement plus en largeur que les demi-brides. Je ne m'attendais pas du tout à cela. Il est vrai que j'ai dû faire au moins 38 millions de demi-brides dans ma vie de crocheteuse, et nettement moins de mailles serrées allongées. Aurais-je travaillé mes mailles allongées plus souplement, à cause du manque d'habitude? Pourtant, en général, c'est l'inverse qui se produit - je travaille un point inconnu plus serré au début, et ensuite je me détends, et mon travail aussi.
So, let's see... What seems most striking to me is that the extended single crochets are much larger than the half double crochets. I didn't expect this at all. For sure, I must have made at least 38 million half double crochets since I started crocheting, and not many extended single crochets. Did I work the extended stitches more loosely, since I'm not used to making them? However, as a general rule, it's quite the contrary: when I try out a new stitch pattern I work more tightly, and the stitches loosen up as I start to feel "at home".
J'ai aussi trouvé intéressant de regarder la "barre" horizontale formée par le brin non travaillé de la maille du rang précédent. Regardez les rayures - avec les ms allongées, cette barre tombe pile-poil au milieu de la rayure. Avec les demi-brides et même les mailles serrées classiques, son emplacement est un peu décalé.
It was also interesting to look at the horizontal "bar", formed by the unworked loop in the stitches in the previous row. Look at the stripes - with the extended stitches, the bars sits right in the middle of the stripe. With the half double crochets, and even the ordinary single crochets, it's always a bit off.
D'accord, je sens que l'obsession me gagne, et ce n'est peut-être pas bon signe... Si vous êtes aussi accro au crochet que moi, vous pouvez continuer les expériences. Sur ce blog, je vais essayer de changer de sujet et de parler de quelques autres des milliards de possibilités qu'offre le crochet...

Mailles serrées "allongées" - Extended single crochet
Ces derniers temps, je suis souvent tombée sur des références à la maille serrée "allongée" (je ne sais pas s'il y a une traduction française bien établie du terme "extended single crochet"). Et comme j'ai une petite crise d'échantillonite en ce moment, j'ai pris quelque restes de fils pour voir ce que cela donnait, en uni et en rayé.
These past weeks, I've often run into mentions of the extended single crochet stitch. I'm in swatching mode right know, so I grabbed some leftovers to try it out, in solid colour and in stripes.
Alors, comment fait-on une maille serrée allongée? Archi-simple, mes amis. Commencez comme pour une maille serrée classique, en passant votre crochet sous la maille du rang précédent, et en ramenant le fil. Vous avec 2 boucles sur votre crochet. Maintenant, passez votre crochet autour du fil, et ramenez-le dans la première boucle seulement (un peu comme si vous faisiez une maille en l'air). Vous avez toujours 2 boucles sur le crochet. Ramenez le fil de nouveau, cette fois-ci à travers les 2 boucles, comme pour une maille serrée habituelle. Voilà, vous avez fait une maille serrée allongée!
So, how do you work an extended single crochet? Easy-peasy, folks! You start as for an ordinary single crochet, putting your hook through the stitch in the previous row, yo and pull through. You have 2 loops on the hook. Now, yo and pull through the first loop only (as if you were making a chain). There are still 2 loops on your hook. Yo again, and pull through both loops, as for an ordinary single crochet. You have made an extended single crochet!
Dans l'échantillon ci-dessus, j'ai travaillé mes mailles uniquement dans le brin avant de la maille du rang précédent. Avez-vous remarqué que l'échantillon est tronqué dans la photo ci-dessus? Oui, il continue après. Suite au prochaine épisode...
In the swatch above, I worked my extended single crochets (esc) through the front loop only. Did you notice that the photo doesn't show the swatch in it's entirety? Yes, it continues. And so does the saga of the esc...

Une écharpe en lisières - A selvedge scarf
Je garde trop de choses - des petits bouts de laine, des morceaux de tissus, des boutons... Mais je n'avais jamais pensé à garder les lisières des tissus au mètre. Quand je vois ce qu'on peut en faire, je me dis que j'ai peut-être tort.
I keep to many things - small amounts of yarn, small pieces of fabric, lonely buttons... But I had never thought of keeping fabric selvedges. However, when I see what you can make with them, I wonder if I've made a mistake throwing them away.

La libération (relative) de mon crochet - Freeing my crochet hook (a little)
Comme je vous l'avais expliqué, le livre de Myra Wood m'avait beaucoup plu et inspiré. Toutefois, je pense que j'aurais pu rester longtemps sans m'accorder le temps d'essayer la technique - j'ai toujours le sentiment d'être débordée, et mes soirées sont courtes.
As I explained earlier, I really enjoyed Myra Wood's book and felt very inspired. However, I think that normally, it would have been long before I took the time out to really try - I always feel swamped with work, and my evenings are short.
Si le printemps n'avait pas été si froid, j'aurais rangé le livre dans ma bibliothèque pour plus tard. Mais j'étais invité à un mariage, la tenue que j'avais prévu était plutôt légère, et j'avais besoin d'un châle en urgence. Aller acheter un châle? Je ne pouvais pas m'y résoudre. J'ai pensé un moment en crocheter un dans un point plutôt simple, mais j'ai décidé que c'était trop ennuyeux. Il fallait que je teste l'approche non prisonnier (merci Fleur, de cette délicieuse expression)!
If spring hadn't been so cold this year, I would have put the book on the shelf for another day. But I was going to a wedding, I had planned a not very warm outfit, and I needed a shawl. Go out and buy one? I couldn't make myself do it. For a while, I thought about
crocheting one in a rather simple stitch pattern, but I decided that would be too boring. I had to test the free-form approach.
Je suis donc allée voir Mme Phildar, avec ma tenue dans un sac en plastique. Tout dans des tons corail, l'accord n'était pas facile. Il fallait aussi être réaliste quant au temps imparti pour réaliser le châle - je ne pouvais pas me permettre d'utiliser un fil trop fin. Résultat des courses: quelques pelotes de Phil Bambou écru.
So, I went to see Mrs Phildar, bringing my outfit in a plastic bag. It was a beautiful coral pink/orange, but the colour wasn't very easy to match. I also needed to be realistic about the time I had to make this shawl - I couldn't use a really thin yarn. I went home again with a bagfull of balls of off-white Phil Bambou.
Sur le fond, rien n'avait vraiment changé. J'étais toujours aussi paralysée avec mon crochet en main et pas de modèle pour me faire démarrer. Mais j'avais un plan... J'ai sorti mes livres de points, et j'ai regardé tous les motifs en rond ou en carré qui me faisaient envie. J'ai 
commencé à en crocheter un. Une fois terminé, je n'ai pas arrêté mon fil. J'ai commencé, avec mon motif comme base, à me promener avec mon crochet et à faire des points différents sous l'impulsion du moment.
At heart, I hadn't really changed. I was still paralyzed when I found myself with my hook in hand and no pattern to get me started. But I had a plan... I pulled out all my stitchionaries and looked again at all the round and square motifs that made my heart sing. I started to crochet one of them. Once it was finished, I didn't stop, I didn't fasten off. Instead I continued working along the edges of my completed motif, making different stitches as I went, listening only to my inspiration.
Les bords de mon motif glissaient vers l'extérieur, se fondant dans une salade de points. J'ai continué jusqu'à avoir l'impression de me répéter, de ne plus m'amuser. Alors, j'ai arrêté mon fil, et j'ai recommencé avec un tout autre motif.
The borders of my motif slid outwards, blurred in a kind of crochet stitch salad. I continued until I felt like I was repeating myself and not having fun anymore. Then, I fastened off, and started again with a different motif.
Je suis assez contente du résultat. Il me rappelle pourquoi je préfère travailler les fils fins (le résultat est plus délicat), et pourquoi j'évite de travailler le blanc et l'écru au crochet (les associations "couverture de lit" ne sont jamais loin...), mais en même temps, je le trouve assez sympa et rigolo. Je me suis beaucoup amusée à faire ce châle, et je recommencerai. Avec un fil plus fin et en couleur!
I'm rather satisfied with my shawl. It reminds me of why I prefer to work with thinner yarn (the resulting fabric is so much more
delicate), and why I generally avoid crocheting in white or off-white (can't get rid of those bedspread associations!), but I also find it a fun piece. I had a great time making this shawl, and I will do free-form again - but with a thinner yarn in colour!
